Shipping Standstill in Guangzhou: Main Channel Blocked After Ship Sinks

At the end of October, a major vessel — Li Hai 5 — sank off the coast of Guangzhou after colliding with the container ship Wan Hai, completely blocking the main navigation channel of Nansha Port. According to updated reports, more than 100 large vessels are unable to enter or leave the port.

Salvage and refloating operations are expected to be completed by December 20. Until then, significant delays, terminal congestion, and booking restrictions are anticipated.

According to Chinese shippers, a real “sea traffic jam” has formed in the Nansha area, with dozens of container ships forced to wait their turn at anchor.
